Architectural Design Competition | Sundsvall Performing Arts Theater | Sweden | Emergent

This proposal for the Sundsvall Performing Arts Theater is based on the creation of a radically contemporary urban space to revitalize the Sundsvall waterfront. While the competition brief calls for the new building to be oriented to allow for a plaza facing the development zone to the west, our scheme consciously orients the plaza to the oceanfront. This plaza is characterized by trees, landscaped topography, and water features which create a microclimate and protect the space from the noise produced by the E4 roadway............more

A House And A Recording Studio | BPQR House | Los Angeles | California | Iwamoto Scott Architecture

The client for BPQR House lives in the house next to this property, and his home-based movie soundtrack editing and recording studio business is crowding the living spaces of the house. As such his and his family’s living and working tightly intertwined. On this neighboring lot there now exists one of those 1940s fairytale genre Hollywood houses at the bottom of the large upslope – currently containing some of the overflowing recording studio program. The design brief is to replace this small and dated structure with a new house with guest quarters and underground recording studio, in a contemporary mode that reflects the owner’s love of curves and the designs of John Lautner, Vernor Panton and African art.......more

Bridge Design | Bow-String Bridge | Albert Canal | Belgium | Ney + Partners

Within the project of widening the Albert Canal and the raising of the boat clearance: De Scheepvaart has awarded to Ney&Partners, in a temporary association with Libost-Group, the full design study of a "generic" bow-string bridge. The bridge design has to be able to fit on 24 different locations along the canal. The proposed project is the result of several typological and technical choices and of a maximum standardization of structural elements leading to an optimal scale economy while keeping a high architectural value. The concept - a bow-string bridge with a central arch with parallel suspension rods and two slopes - must also provide a flexible geometry in order to adapt easily to the different locations and environments along the Albert Canal.......more

Interactive Youth Center | Attractor | Belgrade | exe architecture studio

The idea was to overcome some of the problems of the city of Belgrade by improving its cultural level. Here occurs necessity for connection between existing material structures and contemporary needs for public spaces usage. Intention was to create the valuable place for urban rest, communication and various activities. We chose downtown location, nearby Knez Mihajlova Street, the main urban pedestrian area. Desire was to create an urban magnet, the center of attraction in city networks-cultural center for public gatherings available to everybody. The Attractor has several aspects, which allows non-uniform utilization: functions inside-cultural activities and info point, public space-open amphitheatre, green area-urban oasis in city nucleus and part of the structure in a form of canopy, which protects the street and preserves its values.........more

European Solidarity Centre | Gdansk | Poland | Emergent

The birth of the Solidarity movement marks the transition from totalitarianism to an evolved state of freedom and democracy in Eastern Europe. This transition now seems inevitable but at the time it was a struggle against not only a powerful regime but of a world view which was in its waning years of influence and which, therefore, existed in a heightened state of insecurity. This proposal for the European Solidarity Center in no way tries to represent the events of the 1970s and 1980s; architecture that attempts to do this often remains conceptual and inert. The project instead is a platform for experiencing the site and the history within a new context and new spatial sensibility. It is proposed as a lively, open, urban space which will host both exhibitions on historical events and future-looking research and conferences on contemporary social and political issues..............more

Winner of International Invited Competition | Business and Retail Complex | Tallinn Harbor | Estonia | Salto

The business / retail complex was situated on a crucial and highly debated location on Tallinn renewing waterfront, formerly restricted area – so the issues to solve were architectural as well as urban. The huge plot and demanding program were divided into two separate volumes with contrasting appearances. The bigger one forms a diverse urban block of its own whereas the smaller one engages with the existing hotel next to it. In between, an undulating street is formed, the directional axis of which continues logically the spatial developments of Rotermanni district nearby, enabling straight access from there to the waterfront........more

Governors Island Competition | Wilkinson Eyre

Wilkinson Eyre were shortlisted as part of a team led by landscape architects Field Operations in this competition to enhance Governors Island – a 170 acre territory in the middle of New York harbour between Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey.

The proposals envisage Governors Island as a unique and other-worldly place, enhancing its dramatic exposure to the natural elements and emphasising its sense of remoteness from the city. Bridges, boardwalks, decks and pools bring the visitor close to the water, reinforcing the ‘otherness’ of the island rather than creating a sanitised and over-commercialised frontage.........more

The Library Of The Future | Stockholm City Library | Stockholm | Emergent

The Library of the Future will be defined by its ability to collect and organize information, but also by its ability to network disciplines and people in an urban setting. In this way, the new building design is a linking mechanism at the urban scale. It visually links to the existing building in terms of height and width, and materially via an underground passageway. The new building also connects to the steep hillside of Observatory Hill via a bridge-like construction. This connection allows library visitors to access the historical Stockholm Observatory directly. Between the new building and the hillside is a Garden Plaza which allows visitors space to relax and contemplate away from the busy street of Odengatan........more

Second Prize Architectural Competition | Federal state library Jalisco Guadalajara | Mexico | Burckhardt Partner

The new library in Guadalajara is part of Cesar Pelli’s master plan for the expansion of the university on the northern edge of the city. The imposing, rectangular building encloses the northern edge of the square. A shift away from the square’s axis makes possible a precise connection over the Periferico Norte motorway to the existing university campus. The public square and the library act as the master plan’s anchor. This unity of edifice and square is carried over into the reddish brown tones of the cement that flows from the outer space into the building’s interior...........more

Architectural Design Competition | Mixed Development | Skytower | Amsterdam | MVSA

The design for the Skytower meets the demand for an icon in the Overhoeks district of Amsterdam North. The great potential of the North district, and the close proximity of the river IJ and the historic city centre, call for a dramatic design. The concept draws upon its immediate and wider surroundings, and transposes them into the development’s design principles.
Skytower is in the form of an equilateral triangle that faces out onto the square, Amsterdam North and Dam Square: a robust basis that provides the city with a unique new landmark.
This architectural beacon in Amsterdam North is utilised for special functionality. A hotel, wellness centre, exclusive offices, conference centre and entertainment centre (the Skytower), together with a viewing platform and wedding chapel, are brought together in a harmonious whole, and lend the building its characteristic dynamic........more

A captured beam of light solidified the park-this mixed use tower designed for a prime site in UAE blurs distinction between the park, sky and water. Herman's Square office and residential building | Celje | Slovenia | Enota

The new business residential building is located at an important location in the old city centre in Celje. The land intended for construction is a part of a larger degraded non-built up area, which was somewhat forgotten for decades and exempt from the development of the city. Through the years a very heterogeneous structure evolved around this "wound" in the urban tissue, which was untouched for a long time. Even though according to urban regulations, the location is a part of the narrow city centre, it is not directly adjacent to any historical buildings.........more

Architectural Design Competition | Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point | Hong Kong | Edit

Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point can not consist of two separate buildings divided by the river and reconnected by bridges. We propose one object spanning over the river as a symbol of the union of China and Hong Kong. A softly shaped object that contrasts with the rigid structure of the truck parking which surrounds it. The same soft form is also used for the platform accessed by cars and coaches. Together they work harmoniously as a whole and reflect the ubiquitous flow over the river........more
