Axis Mundi has re-imagined the Whitney Downtown Museum with a self-initiated proposal that is raw and provocative, and as bold in spirit as the original Breuer building on Madison Avenue.

The site is located at the beginning of the High Line, at the intersection of Washington and Gansevoort
Streets. Axis Mundisought to ground the new building in a web of historical axes which form and organize
the program. The plan is based on a series ofsight lines extending to 10th Avenue, the Empire State Building,

Agriculture Museum of Culiacan | Competition Finalist | Mexico | a10 Studio

One of the most internationally recognized emblems of Mexico,and particularly of the State of Sinaloa, is its agricultural production. The state of Sinaloa is known as the "granary of Mexico" because it is the producer of a big variety of food.
Its efficient fields have become national leaders in their yields. Because the economy of Sinaloa is sustained by its agricultural activities, the project seeks to recognize it and promote it, through a project that displays objects related to branches of technology, history of agriculture and agronomy as well as agricultural ways which sustain the economy of Sinaloa.

Through the creation of the Museum of Agriculture the city goverment tries to allow the public to learn more about the forms of production in the locality, while recognizing both the agricultural practice as such, and those who make possible such a noble activity.......more

Changsha Culture Park | Changsha City | China | MAD

Changsha Culture Park is located at the tip of the waterfront of Changsha City. The challenge of this project was to create a new cultural centre for the city that could still secure the connection between the waterfront and the urban context at rear.
Changsha Culture Park is conceived as a man-made, floating platform connecting the three cultural facilities of the site – music hall, museum and library – into one fluid, integrated landscape. The park will be more than just a cultural landmark: it is designed as an open public space, which can be freely accessed by the local citizens.
The landscape is designed as an urban topography. On the ground, beneath the platform, is a semi-outdoor space illuminated by skylights above. The second level, the platform, is a city scale roofscape where the public can roam freely. These two levels permit people to enjoy a full range of cultural activities, both formal and informal, at all times and under any weather conditions: exhibition events, central open plan gatherings, mass concerts, and games are all possible......more

Xiangfan City Museum Hubei | China | Antoine Predock Architect

Fingers of evergreen forest reach down from Xian Shan to tie the Xiangfan City Museum and its site to the mountain. A welcoming entry rises out of the mist and gestures back to the ancient City Center. The building’s limestone base evokes the old city in a modern urban context. Flat polished stainless steel columns line the entry ramp reflecting visitors and the surrounding landscape in a celebration of procession. Adjacent escalators provide easy access to the main entry for the movement impaired.

The Chinese ideogram for landscape - Shan Shui - is literally translated to “mountain” and “water”. This Museum is a landscape, mountain meeting water, symbolic of man’s position between heaven and earth. As visitors pass through the five-story 30,000 gross square meter structure they simultaneously experience the exhibitions though multiple vantage points, unfolding an image in their minds, as in a Wang Hui scroll painting. The two-dimensional representations of a hand scroll are extrapolated into a kinesthetic experience.......more

The Tianjin Museum along with the New Natural History Museum, Art Museum and Library are organized along a cultural corridor within the master plan which is inspired by the founding of Tianjin as the "Land of the Heavenly Ford." The buildings are sited as a sequence of water passages, garden and plazas that engage the public as they pass through the site. Each cultural building incorporates a unique plaza as both an educational device and public interaction space. The Tianjin Museum's City plaza presents the layers of Tianjin history as an occupiable plaza of green space, water and seating at the lake level, while being an educational device that interacts with the City View Window at the upper level of the museum. Similarly, the Art center would incorporate a large art plaza and the library a grand Knowledge plaza representing a contrast of the written words housed within the library and the temporary interaction of the public.......more

The facility is located in close relation to the specific elements of the site, in the tension between cultural and natural landscape, with a spesific contact towards the lake, Movatnet, and the buildings of the open-air museum. The city of Porsgrunn has a long maritime history of shipping, and the unique development of the region is clearly visible in the existing remarkable building structure of the area. The concept of the museum shows a high level of sensitivity towards the existing small buildings yet simultaneously stands out as a contemporary public building - housing a science center that takes its starting point in the narrative about Porsgrunn and Norway’s transformation from being a nation of seafaring to a modern society based on knowledge industry. Taking into account the surrounding building structure, the new building is composed of several smaller volumes with tilted and pitched roofs that are assembled into a larger building unit........more

This Museum is a beacon, a glowing lighthouse of creative exploration open to all forms of expression, production and inhabitation. The building is 'constructed' by the actions of those who occupy is transparent and interstitial spaces. Conceived as a visually and spatially transparent volume in the midst of a dense urban campus, the structure is composed of a double membrane: a translucent skin of glass channels and a wall of pre-cast concrete. The inner wall penetrates the enclosed plenum and glass skin at various locations to provide openings into the museum and views out from the building itself.......more

The birth of the Solidarity movement marks the transition from totalitarianism to an evolved state of freedom and democracy in Eastern Europe. This transition now seems inevitable but at the time it was a struggle against not only a powerful regime but of a world view which was in its waning years of influence and which, therefore, existed in a heightened state of insecurity. This proposal for the European Solidarity Center in no way tries to represent the events of the 1970s and 1980s; architecture that attempts to do this often remains conceptual and inert. The project instead is a platform for experiencing the site and the history within a new context and new spatial sensibility. It is proposed as a lively, open, urban space which will host both exhibitions on historical events and future-looking research and conferences on contemporary social and political issues..............more
