A 250 bed children’s hospital in a forest setting. A highly sustainable, naturally ventilated, building which aims to achieve exemplary status in terms of carbon emissions and is sympathetic to the site in a natural forest habitat.
The new building separates the treatment and diagnostic areas from the ward areas and buries the former block beneath an extensive reinforced concrete and landscaped ‘green’ roof so that it merges with the forest floor.

Dance Palace | St. Petersburg | Russia | UNStudio

The 21,000 m2 Dance Palace forms part of the European Embankment city quarter masterplan for a new urban square in the historic centre of St. Petersburg. The building presents an open and inviting theatre with provision for 1300 guests (large auditorium 1000, small auditorium 300). Integration with the existing neighboring buildings is achieved by both the scale of the building - which in elevation follows St. Petersburg’s typical 28m roofline – and the transformative transparency which is introduced by a facade system of triangular cladding panels. The variation between opaque and perforated panels creates a controlled openness, depending on program, views and orientation. In the main auditorium the horseshoe form was chosen for its acoustic advantages and the proximity it affords to the stage.....more

The Housing+ | Nørre Sundby | Aalborg | C. F. Møller Architects

The Housing+ concept sets the ambitious target of a zero-energy housing scheme, which also includes the tenant’s primary household energy consumption. The complex will thus be 100% relying on renewables.
The 60 units take the form of a sloped volume, from 12 to 4 storeys, creating a large south-facing roof-plane, ideal for solar energy, and just the right size to supply the housing units. This optimized shape also creates a landmark silhouette, prominently positioned between Aalborg’s bridges.......more

National Art Museum Of China | Beijing | OMA

In the past two decades, our museums have become larger and larger; they have now reached a scale at which they can no longer be understood as (large) buildings, but only as (small) cities. Given the area that it covers, the vast number of artworks it will house, the numbers of visitors it will inevitably attract, the turnover of exhibitions it will have to accommodate, NAMOC can be the first museum in the world based on this new paradigm, the first museum conceived as a small city.....more

Architectural Competition | Brancusi Museum | Paris | SPAN

SPAN wins the Brancusi Museum Competition, Paris.

Within Constantin Brancusis body of work is one specific characteristic that emerges on a regular basis: the application of constrictions as specific leitmotiv. These constrictions can be read in various ways, reaching from the definition of rhythmically repeating volumes, as in the Endless Column, or as description of curvilinear bodies, as in La Negresse Blonde and the notoriously famous Bird in Space series. This curvilinear bodies, voluptuous components and undulating elements, are seamlessly and continuously formed into beautiful waistlines, radiating in erotic tension. The design of the new Atelier Brancusi picks up the characteristics of constrictions and explores the opportunities, in terms of architectural space, provided by this technique of spatial formation. ........more

Architectural Design Competition | Sprengel Museum Extension | Hannover | Germany | LAN

The Sprengel Museum extension has enormous potential for change in that the museum must be experienced as a part of the place in which it lives. Set on a plinth, the museum demarcates itself as a sacred space. The building is articulated around a longitudinal street dividing it into isolated spaces. Our proposal seeks to create interaction between the museum site and its immediate surroundings, between a building and a topography, each with their own histories, and provide a contemporary perspective radiating out over the city, the lake, the garden and the museum’s plinth. The project’s verticality enables responses to all the project’s challenges in a single gesture:....more

Mountain Hotel | Geilo | Sea Valley in Geilo | Atelier Oslo

Geilo is the name of a mountain hotel with about 200 apartments, located in the Sea Valley in Geilo. The plot is unregulated, and the premise was to create a hotel in the valley by the ski lifts with an integrated parking for the cottages around.

Intentions
A premise of this study was that the plant would be integrated into the landscape, and not shield the view behind. We wanted to develop a principle which all the rooms in the hotel should have the best view of the beautiful nature around, without seeing anything else. This we achieved by adding rooms, terraced strip in the terrain along the contours. By bukle these bands, we added the desired number of rooms. Another premise was to provide direct skiadkomst to the rooms. Therefore, the terraces sloping, and allows you to ski in and ski-out. All circulation is added around the river that flows naturally through the project. A transparent intermediate in the project form an accessible place, where there is a lobby bar and restaurant. Parking is located inside the ground, behind the rooms with a direct connection.....more

Calabar International Convention Center | Nigeria | Mecanoo

The cultural and geographical context of Calabar (Nigeria) offered a unique opportunity for design exploration. Mecanoo created a design for the Calabar International Convention Center in an invited competition with four other international architecture practices. Mecanoo’s sensitive approach to the project interweaving the contextualsocial, economic and geographical conditions. A key factor taken into account is Calabar’s limited infrastructure: the new convention center had to be flexible, adaptable and easy to maintain. The building has to offer efficient climate control in response to the hot and humid climate of the region.

Continental Tower Block | Stockholm | Sweden | Arkitektfirmaet C. F. Møller

The tower block construction in Stockholm has been planned in connection with the extension of the City Line rail link.
The complex of 100 metres, the equivalent of approximately 30 stories, will include a hotel, offices and possibly housing. The building will be equipped with an entrance to a new station at street level directly opposite the city's old main railway station, Centralen, and will therefore be a landmark for Stockholm''s new metro. C. F. Møller''s design is based on a concept of multi-function, a building where many varying uses can take place simultaneously. The tower draws inspiration from the city of Stockholm, an example of which is Stockholm''s largest church Klara kyrka situated right next to the site. The project reinterprets the city''s beautiful town hall and classic church steeples, which combined make up the city''s historic landmarks and create Stockholm''s historic skyline, but at the same time integrates the unique urban feeling defining the area around Centralstationen......more

Architectural Competition | Fish Market | Bergen | Norway | Atelier Oslo

Fish market in Bergen today consists of a number of temporary and mobile stalls. The municipality wanted to build a fishing hall with attached storage that can replace the temporary stalls, as well as a garage for the mobile stalls.

Intentions
Our proposal combines light, construction and historic traces in a simple and functional building. Support functions fryselagere and toilets form a massive volume of the street at the rear of the lot, a robust bymøbel for example bus stops, benches, bicycle, poster / information fit.

The roof structure collars from this massive volume. Fisk Hall is an open column free space, an uninterrupted continuation of kaiflaten with maximum visual contact with the pier.

One continuous floor where all functions are placed creates a functional operating conditions. More inputs and a column-free room open for many furniture options, and that the fish hall can be divided zones for different opening hours.....more

The Future Metropolis | A Tower of Nests | Kjellgren Kaminsky Architecture

Creating habitats for animals that have been driven out of their natural environments as a result of development. Creating vertical density within the city to reduce sprawl and commuting distances.

Mankind faces a challenge comparable in size with the industrial revolution to build a sustainable society. In order to succeed, we need to learn how to coexist with nature. We propose a building that aims to become a symbol; not of power nor wealth, but of a new era of harmony and interplay between nature and mankind.....more

Zorah Tower | Capezed

Spectacular concept for a high-rise tower designed as an enormous glass hyperboloid with a transparent covered atrium at its heart, extending upward the entire height of the building. The number of storeys and the floor surface area can be adjusted to the requirements of the client. The tower can be used for apartments, shops or offices, but also offers many possibilities for multifunctional use. The form, materialization and engineering make the building a stylish and distinctive icon in the skyline of every metropolitan environment. The appearance and structure provide many advantages. The construction principle guarantees an elegant and stable building with column-free floors. Although the twisted supporting and façade construction may look complicated, it is easily implemented due to the many repetitions in entirely straight elements that are serially produced. Because the atrium is covered with a transparent roofing, the upper storeys in particular receive light from both outside and inside. The atrium also allows natural ventilation so that fewer installations are required. On the ground floor, the atrium serves as an enormous entrance hall, while offering a great variety of spatial experience on other floors as well........more
